History of Veliancode
There is difference of opinion regarding the name Veliancode. The 'Veliam' described in 'Sanga Kala' books could be Veliancode. Another opinion is that Veliancode is the fort of 'Velian' or 'Velians'. Whatever be the origin of the name, Veliancode, an old sea-port, had longstanding trade relations with Arabs and Europeans. It is said that before alighting at Kapad, Vasco De Gama anchored at Veliancode for water and food.NH 17, the life line of the area and of coastal Malabar, as we know, is only modernisation and renovation of the rural pathway, build by Tipu Sultan during his 'Padayottam', to recapture Malabar from the British imperialism.Veliancode is a beautiful coastal village spanning out eastwards from Arabian sea to Naranippuzha (Narani River). Bordering Puduponnani on north and Perumpadappu on south.Veliancode gave birth to great leaders like Ummer Khazi, Kunhimarakkar Shaheed (martyr), K.C.S. Panikkar, who were famous for their leadership, knowledge and ethics.Veliancode is located in Malappuram District of Kerala. It lies near Malappuram. Veliancode Mosque situated here is a shrine of importance to the region.The annual Veliancode Jaram Nercha Festival celebrated in this village attracts devotees from far and near.Veliancode is easily accessible by local buses and taxies from Malappuram. Tirur Railway Station serves this area. Nearest airport is at Kozhikode.
Ummer Khazi (r) - The Eternal Warrier
The name, Khazi Ummer Bin Ali Al Bilankoothi is familiar among the scholars. However, to the common man he is Ummer Khazi. A unique personality who was influenced both the common man and the scholars alike. Only scholars can evaluate scholars. Ummer Khazi has gained in-depth knowledge in all the branches of learning available at that time and authored some excellent books, both pros and poetry, in those fields.His love for Prophet Mohamed (pbuh) is almost intoxication to him. He was often at loss for words, whenever he tried to portry the personality of Prophet Mohamed (pbuh).Ummer Khazi was 45 years of age when the British conquered India. It was Tippu and Hyderali, who ruled Malabar during his young and he experienced the fruits of their ruling. In fact the road, which connects Feroke and Chavakkad passes through the Veliancode Masjid, whre he was Khazi at that time. This was the first highway that evoked major changes in the business and military movements in Malabar.The enigmatic personality of Ummer Khazi (r) left for heavenly abode at the age 94, in 1852, of which the last 50 years of his life was under the British rule.

Who was Ummer Khazi (r)? He was the one who has born almost a century before Gandhiji and has fought many a battle against the British. He is from Kakkathara family. In fact he was imprisoned for the same. However imprisonment only heightened his hatred against the British and he wrote letters to Travancore and Kochi Divans asking for the expulsion of British from India.His personality was a culmination of great scholar, prolific author, a Suphi Pandit and Valiyyu. He was born 1765 (Hijra 1179), as second son to Kaliyarakath Ali Musliar and Kakkathara Amina. He had an elder brother named Kuttussa Khazi, who too was an eminent scholar. Ummer Khazi ha learned his first lesson of Quran from his parents and elder brotehr and joined the famous Tanur Darz at the age of 11. He had his formal education in Quran under the watchful eyes of Ponnani Thunnam Veetil Ahmed Musliar and soon blossomed into a scholar in various fields of the islamic knowledge. After the Tanur Darz, he continued his studies under Ponnani Mammikkutty Maqdoom, where he was the 'Shaik ' resposible for Khadriyya Thareekath.
In Hijra 1273, at the age of 94, the great soul of Ummer Khazi has left for heavenly abode. Let us lead our life in the light of the spiritual enlightenment spread by Ummer Khazi (r). May God bless us.

Ummer Khazi, an 18th century legend, was born and lived in Veliancode. He fought many battle against British and who was imprisoned for the same. His personality was a combination of great scholar, prolific author, a Suphi Pandit, Valiyyu and freedom fighter.
Famous artist K.C.S. Panikkar was born in Veliancode and belongs Kolazhi Cheerambathel family. 'Veliancode Palam' was one of his famous works.
